INSTRUMENTAL WORKSHOPS

Download full details and a booking form from this website.

Following the hugely successful January workshop with Andy Cutting, Jo Freya and Paul Burgess in Moretonhampstead, Devon; the next is on 19/20 November in Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 8AX.

The English Tradition

Ian Dedic (The Committee Band and Panjandrum), Jo Freya (Blowzabella, Old Swan Band, Fraser Sisters & Token Women) and Flos Headford (Old Swan Band & Mellstock Band) will be leading the workshops

When: Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 November 2011.  Morning Workshop 10.00am – 12.30pm.  Afternoon workshop 2.30pm – 5.30pm

Where: The Shoulder of Mutton, Wantage.  We have exclusive use of the three rooms in the pub during the day.

What to Expect:  A relaxed atmosphere

The morning workshops are for ‘single instruments’ (free reed with Ian, fiddle with Flos, and wind & other instruments with Jo) and we’ll look at both tunes and technique.  On the last workshop weekend, concertina joined the free reeds on one day and the windy instruments on the other – there is flexibility!

In the afternoon we will split the group into multi-instrumental ‘bands’ to work on ‘playing for dance’ —the feel, lift and tempo for a good dance tune.

The weekend will focus on the English tradition.  We will also look at some less common but very danceable and catchy non-English tunes for English dancing.

We’re planning for between 10 – 15 people per workshop; enough to create a fun dynamic, but not so many that you get lost in a crowd.

Past experience shows that our format will suit all levels of musician, there is no need to be able to read music.

What it Costs: Both days £69.  Single day bookings will only be possible if the weekend is not fully sold out.  If you cannot make both days please contact me directly.

Accommodation, Refreshments & Dinner

Participants are responsible for finding their own food and accommodation. The Shoulder of Mutton serves a large range of extremely well kept ale and has a lovely vegetarian restaurant.  Drinks and tea/coffee will be available throughout the day at your own cost, and lunch is available.  See http://www.themutton.co.uk/ for sample menus.

A hearty buffet is planned for Saturday evening before the session.

We encourage participants to support the pub that is supporting us, so please eat at The Shoulder!
