Monty's Maggot play traditional English music for English Ceilidhs, English Country Dances, Barn Dances and Concerts.  We also play in decent pubs for fun and beer.

Our cracking-good tunes are played with infectious rhythm, gusto and energy; and if we play a tune that isn't English then it's probably one that should be!

Apart from festivals, we mostly play around Devon, Oxfordshire, and the South and West of England.

If you want to book a band that plays really danceable, toetapping music, then call Jeremy on 07717461972 or email

INSTRUMENTAL WORKSHOPS

We have been running highly successful workshops in Devon and Oxfordshire since 2009.  Join our email list to be notified of future workshops - we limit numbers and places sell out quite quickly - ask jeremy@tozerofdevon.net

19/20 Nov 2011, The English Tradition with
Ian Dedic (The Committee Band and Panjandrum), Jo Freya (Old Swan Band, Fraser Sisters & Token Women) and Flos Headford (Old Swan & Mellstock Bands) in Wantage, Oxon.  This was a huge success and we were immediately asked by everyone there to repeat exactly the same thing next year.  So it's in the calendar.  More to follow!!

19/20 May 2012, The BlowzabellaTradition
with Andy Cutting (melodeon),  Jo Freya (wind), and Dave Shepherd (fiddle).  The 'Mayzobella Workshop' will be based on the Shoulder of Mutton, Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 8AX.

19/20 May 2012 The Blowzabella / Euro Tradition

Download full details and a booking form from this website.

Andy Cutting, Jo Freya and Dave Shepherd from Blowzabella will be leading the workshops.

When: Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 May 2012.  Morning Workshop 10.00am – 12.45pm.  Afternoon workshop 2.30pm – 5.30pm

Where: The Shoulder of Mutton, Wantage and other nearby rooms.

What to Expect:
  A relaxed atmosphere

The morning workshops are for ‘single instruments’ (boxes with Andy, fiddle with Dave, and wind & other instruments with Jo) and we’ll look at both tunes and technique.

In the afternoon we will split the group into multi-instrumental ‘bands’ to work on ‘playing for dance’ —the feel, lift and tempo for a good dance tune.  Saturday afternoon starts with a short dance workshop, since to play for dance, one needs to know the dance!

Both days will focus on the Blowzabella/Euro tradition.  We’re planning for around 10-15 people per workshop; enough for a fun dynamic, but not so many that you get lost in a crowd.

Past experience shows that our format will suit all levels of musician, there is no need to be able to read music. workshop2

What it Costs: Both days £79.  Single day bookings will only be possible if the weekend is not fully sold out.  If you cannot make both days please contact me directly.

Accommodation, Refreshments & Dinner

Participants are responsible for finding their own overnight accommodation if it's needed. The Shoulder of Mutton serves a large range of extremely well kept ales and ciders and has a lovely vegetarian restaurant.  Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day and is included in the fee.  Lunch and dinner will be a buffet format for those that book.

See http://www.themutton.co.uk/
 for sample menus.

The Mutton's food is superb - we are well catered for with no end of food and snacks of very high quality.
We encourage participants to support the pub that is supporting us, so please eat at The Shoulder!
