Monty's Maggot play traditional English music for English Ceilidhs, English Country Dances, Barn Dances and Concerts.  We also play in decent pubs for fun and beer.

Our cracking-good tunes are played with infectious rhythm, gusto and energy; and if we play a tune that isn't English then it's probably one that should be!

Apart from festivals, we mostly play around Devon, Oxfordshire, and the South and West of England.

If you want to book a band that plays really danceable, toetapping music, then call Jeremy on 07717461972 or email

WHAT IS "ENGLISH CEILIDH"?

“English Ceilidh” (aka “EC” or barndance) is a dance type derived from traditional English country dancing, with emphasis on energy, stepping and style rather than complexity.  The dances are usually for sets of couples, rather than being a dance for a couple alone; and are usually walked through and then called before the tune is played.

The dance should be danced throughout, rather than walked, which is unlike “Social” or “Playford” dances where complexity of the figures in the dance is more important than the stepping.  If you see people going to an English dance wearing trainers and shorts, it’s more likely that they are going to an English Ceilidh than to an English country dance!

Here's what it looks like.
