CEILIDHS

Thursday 28 July 2011, Blackmore Marquee, Sidmouth.  A ceilidh open to the public to celebrate the wedding of Sidmouth festivalstalwart John Golightly and Susie Campbell, 2 - 6 pm.  With Caller Fee Lock.

Saturday 3 September 2011, Wallingford Bunkfest Family ceilidh 4 - 5.30 pm.  With caller Aidan Hansell.

What is English Ceilidh?

“English Ceilidh” (aka “EC”) is a dance type derived from traditional English country dancing, with emphasis on energy, stepping and style rather than complexity.  The dances are usually for sets of couples, rather than being a dance for a couple alone; and are usually walked through and then called before the tune is played.

The dance should be danced throughout, rather than walked, which is unlike “Social” or “Playford” dances where complexity of the figures in the dance is more important than the stepping.  If you see people going to an English dance wearing trainers and shorts, it’s more likely that they are going to an English Ceilidh than to an English country dance!

Here's what it looks like.
